The Society of Independent Cinematographers (S.I.C.) is an international fellowship of independent cinematographers and filmmakers.

The purpose of the SIC is to

promote the art and craft of cinematography and to bring together a fellowship of independent filmmaking professionals, from aspiring students and camera assistants to senior directors of photography

The SIC focusses on

independent

film professionals who are either self-employed and/or who are not affiliated or employed by e.g. a production company and do their work with complete independence.

The SIC was founded as an alternative to other established societies of cinematographers motivated by the following facts:

Not all countries or regions provide a society of cinematographers. Most societies charge high annual subscription fees and joining fees beyond the budget of many independent cinematographer, usually hundreds of dollars annually and sometimes even nearing or exceeding a thousand dollars. Most societies have very strict membership criteria that often can't be satisfied by independent cinematographers.

in general. Promoting and showcasing our members and their work through our website, social media channels, online publications and special events. Providing a members-only internet community website to serve and uphold these objectives.

The ASC believes cinematographers and their fellow filmmakers should reflect the diverse population of the world at large, irrespective of gender, race, religion, economic status or orientation, and is committed to encouraging and providing advancement for the underrepresented.

The SIC has established a closed Social Network site for it's members at https://intsic.org. The SIC Social Network is the SIC's main communication channel and membership is mandatory. Members are encouraged to visit the website regularly. The SIC will publish news and updates in the "News space". The SIC Social Network features topic-bound "spaces" that can be compared to Facebook Groups, and a "followers" system. Members receive a profile page and can post messages, images, videos, comments and likes. Members can exchange direct messages and control their privacy/visibility settings. 

We regard the SIC Social Network as "the LinkedIn for cinematographers".

Martin Beek, S.I.C. is a Dutch cinematograper who has been a cameraman for Amblin Entertainment / Steven Spielberg for several decades.

The Society of Independent Cinematographers Operating on a global scale, accommodating members from all around the world. Allowing qualifying "full members" to carry the post-nominal title "SIC" after his or her name.

About the S.I.C.

The Society of Independent Cinematographers (SIC) is a non-profit organization, founded in 2018 by Martin Beek, Barry Johnson, Florian Bachman, Scott Ross and Robert Chapman. 

The purpose of the SIC is to promote the art and craft of cinematography and to bring together a fellowship of independent filmmaking professionals, from aspiring students and camera assistants to senior directors of photography.

The SIC focusses on independent film professionals who are either self-employed and/or who are not affiliated or employed by e.g. a production company and do their work with complete independence.

The SIC is a global organization and has it's foundation seat in the Netherlands, Europe. The SIC will be officially registered as a Non Profit Organization with the Chamber of Commerce of Amsterdam or other Dutch municipality during the coarse of 2019.

Types of membership and criteria

The SIC offers the following types of membership. 

 

Membership payment

Membership fees will be calculated based on the remaining months of the current year, including the current month. Membership fees have to be paid in advance, after succesful application. Payment will be requested by means of an e-mail with a link to an electronic payment provider (Paypal or iDeal). Also credit cards and bank transfers are accepted. For European members, a few alternative electronic payment methods are available.

Membership will not be automatically extended. Members will receive a new payment request by email in november and a reminder in December. Unpaid memberships will expire on the first of February each year.

Important: fees can be paid in your local currency via our payment partner, but will be converted to the amount in Euros. Read about Paypal exchange rates on this page.

 

How to apply

Applicants for full and associate membership can apply in the following manner:

You will receive a confirmation within one day. We will need upto two more days to check the requested criteria and prepare your account. After this we will inform you about your application status and eventually provide you with a payment request email. After reception of your payment, your membership and your online SIC account will be activated. Full members will receive a printed certificate within 60 days after regristration.

Applicants for Junior and Community membership can sign up via the website's homepage here and follow the online instructions; their account will be automatically activated. Junior members can pay using the Payment button (link) above. Account and membership status will be updated after payment is received.

 

2019 introduction offer

The SIC has been established in 2018 and during 2019 we are growing our network and developing our new website, the SIC Social Network. Although the website is fully operational, we are still developing and enriching it's content. New groups (fora, "spaces") and content are added constantly, on a daily basis. The SIC is promoted, new members are invited and the society is taking shape. This will continue during the course of 2019.

Although the society consist of more than "the website", we have decided to reward the members who join during 2019 with a 25% discount on all membership fees. If you apply for membership before September 1 2019, your membership fee for 2019 is automatically discounted.

 

SIC Social Network website

The SIC has established a closed Social Network site for it's members at https://intsic.org. The SIC Social Network is the SIC's main communication channel and membership is mandatory. Members are encouraged to visit the website regularly. The SIC will publish news and updates in the "News space". The SIC Social Network features topic-bound "spaces" that can be compared to Facebook Groups, and a "followers" system. Members receive a profile page and can post messages, images, videos, comments and likes. Members can exchange direct messages and control their privacy/visibility settings. 

We regard the SIC Social Network as "the LinkedIn for cinematographers".

Full- and associate members can create their own spaces, a bit like Facebook pages, for their company, production or special interests.

The SIC Social Network is home of the annual SIC Film Festival. For this purpose we have developed a closed "safe screeners" video streaming application that will premiere in 2020.

The SIC Social Network is "members-only" and not publicly accessible and posts can not be shared on other networks. Applicants can register an account free of charge, awaiting approval.

 

SIC annual Film Festival

The SIC will organize an online annual film festival among it's members. The first episode will be held in august 2020. Please keep an eye on the announcements on the SIC Social Network website. 

 

SIC Patron Membership

Suppliers to the industry can request access to the website via a Junior Account. The SIC invites companies, such as equipment manufacturers, technology providers, image processors and others, to join with the SIC in promoting and advancing professional cinematography. The SIC website offers limited sponsoring/advertising possibilities for engaging companies. Please contact the SIC Social Network webmaster for more information.

 

SIC chairman

Interim chairman of the SIC is Martin Beek, SIC.
Martin is director of photography and founding member of the association. He fulfills the role of chairman on an interim basis through the year 2019. In 2020 new foundation board elections will be held.
